Failing to Identify the Interactions of Drugs

December 2024

Drug interaction malpractice occurs when healthcare providers fail to identify the harmful interactions between medications that a patient is taking.  The failure to identify the interactions between medications can have severe and even deadly consequences for the patient.

A doctor and a pharmacist have duty to review a patient's medical history including the current medications the patient is on before prescribing a new drug.  They are expected to carefullly assess the potential drug interactions, stay informed about the latest research on drug interactions and monitor the patient for adverse reactions.

A failure to identify a drug interaction can occure due to overlooking a patient's chart, neglecting to ask about current medications, failing to consider over the counter supplements a patient may be taking and being unaware of specific drug interaction risks.

In summary, failing to identify drug interactions can consititue medical malpractice.  Pharmacists and healthcare providers have important roles to play in preventing these dangerous errors.
