Stop for the School Bus
August 2025
The familiar sight of the big yellow school bus signals the start of new school year. While school buses are the safest mode of transportation for students, the most dangerous moments are when a student gets on and off the school bus. A driver on the road has a duty to be careful around a school bus and lookout for children.
Wisconsin law requires that a driver stop 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and has its flashing red warning lights on. This law applies to vehicles approaching from behind the school bus and also those approaching the school bus in an oncoming lane. A vehicle may not begin to proceed again until the red lights are turned off and the school bus again starts to proceed. The stop arm on the bus is an added communication to the driver to stop. However, the lack of an extended stop arm is not a reason to pass the school bus when the arm is flashing.
